"..."Fairview" presents itself at first as an innocuously broad family comedy. Beverly is preparing a birthday dinner for her mother, and she desperately wants everything to go right. She's convinced husband Dayton has forgotten to buy the root vegetables she needs (he hasn't). Her brother Tyrone has not arrived yet, but her glamorous and vain sister Jasmine has. She and Beverly immediately begin to clash. One sore point is that Keisha, a high-achieving student, wants to take a gap year before college and has enlisted Aunt Jasmine in her effort to persuade Beverly that it's a good idea."

"...It's no secret that there's power in story. But the truth that resides (or doesn't) in narratives often gets decided by who holds the pen. In SpeakEasy Stage Company's production of the high-toned "Fairview" by Jackie Sibblies Drury (at the Calderwood Pavilion through March 11), a birthday party for Grandma becomes the lens through which to interrogate the white gaze, overt and subtle racism, unwanted scrutiny and all the squirming discomfort that comes along with it. But it's also funny at times, full of hijinks and clever musical choices."

"...Writing about Fairview is problematic because the script’s oddball twists and turns are part of the fun, and that makes it nearly impossible to sidestep spoilers. I will do my best not to give away any surprises, though I would point out that the dramatist herself short circuits her circus of caricatures when she nosedives, from time to time, into earnestness, particularly at the show’s conclusion. Still, there’s enough nerviness throughout to keep you engaged over the dull patches."
